DESCRIPTION:
EPW - George Graham, London, cylinder fusee, 48mm, silver OF original case with incuse "W S" for casemaker William Sherwood, initials engraved to rear, signed silver champlevé dial with winding aperture at 3, minute hand with elegant pronounced upward arched segment for winding arbor clearance, KWKS (key not included with this lot), cylinder escapement with brass escape wheel and steel cylinder, pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at its neck, large diamond endstone, gilt mvt with signed gilt locking dust-cap, s#5277 with matching serial number within case. George Graham was born in 1674, apprenticed to Henry Aske in 1688, was admitted a Freeman of the Clockmakers' Company in 1695 and immediately became a journeyman for the renowned Thomas Tompion, and ultimately became partners with Tompion and continued the business following Tompion's death in 1713 until Graham's own passing in 1751. Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, short scratches adjacent pillar pins, few fine scratches elsewhere; excellent dial; excellent hands; case shows light wear, an attractive patina, few mild small nicks, reduced engraving detail, button latch good; bow pivots freely; domed glass crystal with some scratches.
